Garage door questions, answered

Straight answers from the people who fix and install garage doors every day. Don’t see yours? Call (949) 515-8363.

Prices and booking

Do you give prices online or over the phone?

We give you a clear written price before any work starts. Every door, spring and opener is a little different, so we look at yours first instead of quoting a number that might change.

How fast can you come out?

Call by 11 am and we can usually fix it the same day. Later calls are usually scheduled for the next day.

How do I book?

Call (949) 515-8363, book a time online, or send us a request with photos. Requests and bookings go straight into our scheduling system.

Springs

Is it safe to use my door with a broken spring?

No. With a broken spring the door is dead weight. Running it can damage the opener, pull the door off its tracks or hurt someone. Leave it closed if you can and call us.

How long do garage door springs last?

Our replacement springs typically last 7 to 12 years with normal use. A standard torsion spring is rated around 10,000 cycles, and one cycle is one open and close. Busy garages wear them out sooner. Longer-life, high-cycle springs are available.

If one spring broke, should I replace both?

We recommend it. Springs on the same door are the same age, so when one breaks the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at once saves you a second visit. We usually recommend new lift cables at the same time.

My two-car door has one spring. Should it have two?

We advise two springs on a two-car door. It balances the door better and the springs last longer.

Can I buy a spring and install it myself?

We don’t recommend it. A wound torsion spring holds enough force to cause serious injury if it slips. We don’t sell torsion springs to homeowners.

My door feels heavy. Do I need new springs?

Not always. The door may just be out of balance. On a tune-up we adjust the springs, tracks, hinges and opener. If the springs are rusty or over 10 years old, we may recommend replacing them.

Repairs

My door came off its tracks. What should I do?

Leave it where it is. Don’t force it down or run the opener: there is extreme tension on the cables and springs and the door could fall. Keep people and cars clear and call us.

Openers

Which openers do you install?

We install LiftMaster, Genie and Marantec openers, and we recommend LiftMaster for most homes. Belt, chain and wall-mount models are all available.

Is your opener different from one I could buy at a home store?

We install LiftMaster’s professional line. Many store models use a rail that comes in pieces and bolts together, which can flex and get noisy. And if something goes wrong with ours, you call us instead of taking it down and boxing it up.

Do I need a battery backup on my opener?

For any new opener in California, yes. Since July 1, 2019, state law (SB 969) has required a battery backup on residential garage door openers that are sold or installed. Every opener we install has one.

Should I repair my opener or replace it?

If it’s under about 12 years old, a repair is usually the better value. Older openers are often worth replacing, especially if they lack modern safety features or a battery backup.

New doors

Which garage door brands do you install?

AlumaDoor, C.H.I., Martin, Carriage House, Ranch House Doors, Amarr, Unique and Elegant. We’ll bring samples and help you choose.

How does a new door project work?

We visit, measure and show you styles, colors and windows. You get a written price before anything is ordered. When your door arrives, our crew installs it, tests it and tunes it.

Gates

Do you install and repair gates?

Yes. Our license covers doors, gates and activating devices. We install aluminum and glass pedestrian gates and driveway gate openers, and repair gate tracks, wheels, chains, receivers and operators.

Swing gate or slide gate?

A swing gate needs clear, fairly level space to open into. A slide gate needs room beside the opening for the gate to roll into. We’ll look at your driveway and tell you which fits.
